Adult Learning Garners $100K

Arcata – The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Humboldt State University has received a $100,000 renewal grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation of San Francisco to continue low-cost education for Humboldt County adults more than 50 years old.

It is the second grant awarded to HSU’s OLLI program since it began in 2005 and a free Open House on the next set of courses will be held on Saturday, January 26, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921 Waterfront Drive, in Eureka.

OLLI offers a variety of classes and workshops for adults above age 50. No homework, tests or previous degrees are required. Spring courses will include Steinbeck, Islam, Spirituality, Humboldt History, Climate Change, Great Decisions, Razor Clamming, Tidepooling, Mosaics, Photography and the Films of Capra, among others.

HSU OLLI is affiliated with the national network funded by the Bernard Osher Foundation. Currently there are more than 120 programs with 65,000 members nationwide.

“We really appreciate the foundation’s generosity and look forward to expanding our courses and membership,” said Laina Warsavage, Humboldt State’s OLLI Coordinator. “There is a strong interest from people who want to explore new ideas, develop creative ways of self expression and have fun with new and old friends. Our goal is to continue to engage interesting faculty and develop a relevant and enriching curriculum to help members explore themselves and their world.”

Both daytime and evening courses are available and the annual membership fee of $25.00 provides a host of Humboldt State benefits. They include discounts on classes, priority enrollment and an HSU ID with library, database and computer lab privileges. There are also student discounts on HSU Book Store items such as computers, books and software, free admission to HSU athletic events, discounts at the University recreation center, free AMRTS bus rides and a discounted rate of $15.00 for a JackPass that offers unlimited access on Redwood Transit and Eureka Transit System buses.

OLLI’s January 26 Open House will introduce instructors, offer class sign-ups and provide information about other resources for adults 50 and older. Details are available at OLLI’s website or by calling 707/826-5880, or from Laina Warsavage at HSU’s Office of Extended Education at 826-3743 or laina@humboldt.edu
