Football: Back in the GNAC, Jacks’ schedule looks solid

ARCATA — Following two years as an independent, Humboldt State football returns to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as a full member, with eight league games on its 2008 schedule.

Next fall’s HSU football schedule, announced Wednesday, features five home games among the total of 11. The bulk of the slate is occupied by the league games, with home and away contests against Western Washington, Central Washington, Western Oregon and Dixie State.

Being in a conference again gives us a tangible goal to work towards,” HSU head coach Rob Smith said. “We have a bowl game we can possibly qualify for, and our players have the chance to receive individual honors.”

HSU opens the 2008 campaign on Aug. 30 with a road game against NCAA Division IAA Sacramento State, followed up with its annual rivalry game against Southern Oregon, this year played in Ashland, Ore. The Lumberjacks’ Sept. 30 home opener is also the GNAC opener, and features Western Washington, the program new Lumberjack head coach Rob Smith directed for 17 years.

Homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 4 against another familiar opponent, Azusa Pacific. Kickoff for all home games is at 6 p.m. in Redwood Bowl.

“We have five home games and six away games, without any really difficult back-to-back travel,” Smith said. “I’m very pleased with the way the schedule worked out, and excited about the teams we’ll be playing.”
