David Hidalgo and Louie Perez take time out of their rigorous Los Lobos touring schedule to come together for a small run of songwriter performances, to support their independent release of “The Long Goodbye,” a collection of important unreleased songs and rare recordings; songs that come from a rootsy, Americana notion.
Stripped down and unassuming, this tour offers a retrospective of 40 years of making music from one of the most iconic rock bands of our time. It’s an opportunity to look back and remember but more a chance to look forward to what’s next, with anticipation.
It began in high school: David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez became friends and started writing songs after school. Now, 40 years later, the front men of the distinguished East L.A. rock group Los Lobos bring it full circle and treat audiences to a songwriting showcase and acoustic performance.
“We started this musical conversation back in about 1970, and we haven’t stopped talking,” Pérez says, sounding simultaneously amused and incredulous at the realization that it’s been so long. “That’s why it’s important for us to explain how it’s done; to sit down and say, Hey, this is us as songwriters. This is where the process starts.”
