Central Valley squads up next for Lumberjacks

ARCATA — The long bus ride to Turlock and the relatively short ride home from Chico are this week’s travel plans for the Lumberjacks, who make their final journey of the regular season this week. Of course, the ride home will be even shorter if the Jacks can bring home a pair of victories. They’ll begin that quest against the CSU Stanislaus Warriors at 7:30 p.m. Friday, then take on the Chico State Wildcats at the same time Saturday.

Lumberjacks Notes: The status of Cy Vandermeer continues to be the most talked-about Jacks-related topic. The 6-9 senior went down two weeks ago with a knee injury, and following an MRI, his status is hopeful for a return this week. Still, having not practiced last week, whether Vandermeer has enough mobility to be effective is yet to be determined. Stay tuned. …Devin Peal’s quest for All-American status continues, the senior adding to his scoring and rebound totals with another impressive weekend. He reamins at the top of the CCAA’s scoring leaders with an average of 19.0 points per game, and ranks sixth in rebounding with 6.5 per contest. …As a team, the Jacks are the best shooting unit in the CCAA with a field goal percentage of .476. Their weakest category, however, is field goal percentage defense, where they rank 10th of the 11 league schools by allowing opponents to shoot at a .475 clip. …Grayson Moyer has moved up again on the list of HSU’s all-time leading scorers, standing third with 1,455 points in his four-year career. Ahead of him are Austin Nichols (2,501) and Fred Hooks (2,077). Moyer is also currently tied for second all-time in assists, his 363 matching the career total of Jeremy Robinson. Finally, his 161 three-pointers ranks fourth all-time. …Will Sheufelt has moved in among the leaders as well, standing fourth in assists with 330 and fifth in three-pointers with 151 in his career. …Finally, Devin Peal stands sixth all-tie in rebounds with 624 in three seasons, and Vandermeer lists just behind him in that category with 554.

Opponents Notes: Cal State Stanislaus enters the week with a 5-18 overall record, suffering through a disappointing season that had higher expectations. Still, the Warriors have been competitive in most contests and claimed a 64-62 win over Cal Poly Pomona just a week ago on the road. …Former HSU player Rick Cardoso is enjoying an outstanding senior season, and has led the Warriors in scoring their past five games. For the season, Cardoso is averaging 14.0 points per game, just behind teammate Heath Colvin’s 14.4 average. …Chico State has suffered a similar season, standing at 6-17 overall entering the week. The Wildcats claimed a huge morale victory last week when they knocked off front-runner Cal State San Bernardino on the Coyotes’ home court. …Darroll Phillips, who earned all-tourney honors at the DeBeni Classic hosted by HSU in December, is the Wildcats’ leading scorer at 16.2 points per game. Point guard Justin Argenal is the team’s catalyst, dishing 118 assists thus far.

Woods’ Wisdom: “These teams are dangerous. They’re trying to get into the conference tournament, so they’re motivated. They each had a big win last week against teams we couldn’t beat on the road. I have a great deal of respect for both coaches.” …When we look at the past five games or so, our bench has been very productive, both as a unit and individually. I’m real happy about their progress. It can take some time, but now the opportunity has come. The group feels that this is their chance.”
