The exhibition focuses on the “Construction of Modern Girlhood,” and examines the role young girls have taken on in the contemporary world. Aoki uses a combination of diverse mediums and humor to addresses the salable “girl power” myth and the media’s pressure on girls. Through narrative prints, works on paper, and sculpture Aoki creates an alternative universe run by anime-style female construction workers who build monuments to girlhood. Katherine Aoki is currently assistant professor at Santa Clara University and has exhibited in San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York City, and Tokyo.
