Daylong Festivities Planned for April 25 Founders’ Day

Humboldt State University caps off its year-long Centennial celebration on Founders’ Day, April 25, with a host of activities.

A historical record including items representing what Humboldt State means to current students, faculty and staff will be buried in a time capsule at 11 a.m. in front of the Library to start the events. The day concludes with the Dance of the Century, a decade-themed party for the campus community and alumni, beginning at 8 p.m. in the Kinesiology & Athletics Building.

Following is a detailed schedule of Founders’ Day activities.

Centennial Time Capsule Burial • 11 a.m., in front of the Library
Witness history as we bury the Centennial time capsule in front of the library. The capsule will be filled with items that represent the HSU campus, as compiled by students, staff and faculty.

Ideafest • Nelson Hall • 3 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. • Nelson Hall
Ideafest showcases an extensive variety of current student projects and research in the form of poster presentations, performances and demonstrations.

HSU Composers Centennial Concert • 8 p.m. • Fulkerson Recital Hall

The HSU Music Department large ensembles will celebrate a century of music at HSU by hosting the Centennial Concert in the Van Duzer Theatre at 8 p.m. Among the featured works are: “The Testament of Freedom” by Randall Thompson, performed by the Humboldt Symphony, University Singers and Humboldt Chorale; “Centennial Flourish, Sempre Pro Veritas (Always for Truth),” a new piece by Gilbert Cline, performed by the Humboldt Bay Brass Band; a new arrangement of the HSU Alma Mater by professor Brian Post performed by the Symphonic Band with guest conductor Kenneth Ayoob. The Jazz Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble will also perform.

Dance of the Century • 8 p.m.–midnight • Kinesiology & Athletics Building
Price: FREE entry and hors d’oeuvres. No host bar. Must be 18 years or older
Attendees are encouraged to dress in costume from their favorite decade. The event features music, prizes, free hors d’ oeuvres, a speakeasy-themed beer/wine no host bar with karaoke, dance performances, a photo booth, games and more. Screenings of HSU’s Centennial Documentary, directed by alum Benjamin Bettenhausen (’07, Physics) will be held hourly beginning at 9 p.m.
