Humboldt State University First Street Gallery presents Young Alumni 2007: Works by Recent HSU Graduates, on exhibit July 5 through August 5. The Gallery bills the exhibition as clear evidence of the excellent career preparation HSU provides art majors.
“The alumni participating in this show have all developed to a point where they are working at a professional level as artists,” said Jack Bentley, First Street’s director. “All 16 participants demonstrate real evidence of artistic success, and crucial to that success are the less tangible qualities they all share—a dedication and commitment to making art a way of life and a deep engagement with their work on poetic and intellectual levels.”
The participating artists are: Marci Carl- ceramics: Caitlin Collings- photography; Jessica DAvanza photography; Britta Gudmunson – photography,; Tom Harley painting; Patrick Hillman photography; Jamie Loomis painting; Elizabeth Perez painting; Heather McFadin metalsmithy/jewelry; Justin Mitman ceramic sculpture; Avery Palmer ceramic sculpture; Fernando Ramirez painting; Bryan Schoneman sculpture; Victoria Viramontes painting; Tara Weidenhammer printmaking and painting; and Brian Woida sculpture.
Art is one of the highest enrolled majors at HSU and the Art Department offers classes with 25 full and part-time instructors, plus multiple, well-equipped studio facilities and several campus showcases that enable undergraduates to get early experience of presenting their works to the public. Additionally, students enrolled in the Art Departments Museum and Gallery Practices Program gain practical, hands-on training as they design, coordinate and curate exhibits at First Street Gallery.
A public reception for the artists is scheduled Saturday, July 7, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., during Eureka Main Streets Arts Alive program.
HSU First Street Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m and is located at 422 First Street in Eureka. Admission is free to all; school groups are encouraged to call ahead to arrange tours at 707-826-3424. Or click on www.humboldt.edu/~first.
