The broadsides are on loan from various sources to the Friends of William Stafford. Sponsored by the HSU Library, English Department and Art Department, the exhibit features matted and framed letterpress broadsides, a printing process that has changed little since the Middle Ages.
The prints are collaborations among printers, writers, and artists who may be printmakers, woodcut illustrators, calligraphers, or paper makers. For example, the broadside of Jane Hirshfield’s poem is on paper made by Karla Elling from grasses harvested by the poet on her property.
The exhibit opens Fri., Apr.l 20, with a reception from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. in the Library’s Fishbowl, Room 209. The reception will include a poetry reading and an opportunity to view HSU student broadsides created at a workshop presented by Jim Dodge and Jerry Martien of the Creative Writing program and Sarah Whorf and Wayne Knight of the Art Department.
