Former President Jimmy Carter traveled to China in January and was asked by the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs to collaborate on rural community building projects.
The mission team will examine various aspects of rural community development. It also will visit one or two provinces to examine the progress of the Carter Center’s rural health pilot project in China.
“It is an honor to be invited to work with a group of exceptional scholars and political leaders to engage China,” Wang said. “Meaningful dialogue and discussion are indispensable to harmonious relations between the United States and the Chinese.”
Wang was a member of a Carter Center election observation team that canvassed China in 2005.
The Carter Center is a non-partisan advocate of worldwide human rights and supports numerous health programs internationally to combat disease. Under a 1997 agreement, center observers monitor village elections in China to foster democratic practices and voting procedures at the grass roots.
The Carter Center works in partnership with Emory University and collaborates with more than 70 countries. It is led by the former President and First Lady.
