HSU Students Win State Mapping Awards

Humboldt State University geography majors Diana Muncy and Amber White won $125 first-place awards in cartography competitions during the recent annual meeting of the California Geographical Society in Solvang.

Muncy won the paper map competition with “A ‘Peak’ at Upheaval: The Uplifting Physical Geography of Alaska.” White took first in the computer cartography category with her interactive map, “Arcata, California: Tsunami Risk.”

Rachel Rodriguez, natural resources planning major, garnered $75.00 for third place in paper cartography with “Humboldt Archipelago.”

Founded in 1946, the California Geographical Society (CGS) is the oldest statewide organization devoted to fostering understanding of geography and promoting interaction among academic and applied geographers and the general public.

The annual conference, which will be hosted by CSU-Fullerton in 2010, combines daylong field trips, workshops, paper sessions and poster and map displays. Students network with peers from the CSU, California’s community colleges and K-12 educators. Details are available at: http://www.calgeog.org.
