Lumberjacks Notes: Last week’s games showed a break in pattern for the Lumberjacks as they captured both CCAA games. The fear of losing another close game was prevalent as the Jacks were trailing by two heading into the second half against Sonoma State. As the game became a battle for the lead, offensive success in the post led to the Lumberjacks’ first CCAA win. In Saturday’s match up against UC San Diego, HSU’s early lead and successful three-pointers were key to its second CCAA consecutive win. “We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now,” HSU head coach Joddie Gleason said. “We have a swagger about us and an attitude of expecting to win. The greatest improvement has come in out team defense. Out main focus has been to not allow teams to get a shot off as easily.” … Posting a 2-2 CCAA record and a 6-3 overall, the Jacks top the league in scoring offense, field goal percentage and three-point field goals made. The Lumberjacks have tallied 840 points, averaging 76.4 points per game, while holding a .438 field goal percent and an average of 7.45 three-pointers per game. They also possess the No. 2 spot in steals with 12 fewer than San Francisco State. … Due to a collision in the Sonoma State game, Trisha Alaba suffered some swelling and soreness in the right knee she had surgically repaired in the off-season. Jessica Haayer is battling the effects of a virus that teammate Jennifer Enos had last week.
Opponent’s Notes: San Francisco State enters this weekend’s competition with a three-game losing streak to contribute to its 4-7 overall record and a 1-3 league record. … Krystle Mays had a double-double night, with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Dominique Hunter led the Gators in points with 20, in the their lone league win over Cal Poly Pomona, 59-57. Mays and Hunter are a double threat for the Gators, with Mays averaging 13.7 points per game and 7.4 rebounds, and Hunter averaging 11.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. … Cal State University Monterey Bay has achieved a 1-3 league record and an overall record of 2-9. … Dana Andrews, sister of former HSU player Haley Andrews, is CSU Monterey Bay’s offensive threat, totaling 204 points and averaging 18.5 points per game so far this season. …The Otters’ lone league win also came over Cal Poly Pomona, 77-71, with four players posting double figures. Andrews led the team with 27 points, Alma Lopez tallied 16 points and Britnea Moore hit 17 points, while Ja’Nae Westmoreland added 11 rebounds.
Head-to-Head: HSU swept the both match ups against San Francisco State last year, improving its all-time series record to 21-29. The Lumberjacks split last year’s two games against Cal State University Monterey Bay to contribute to a 3-1 all-time record.
Gleason’s Comments: “Brittany (Taylor) has really improved, defensively. She was always a solid offensive player, but she’s taken a lot of pride in improving her defense and that’s made her a valuable player off the bench for us.” … “San Francisco State is a very athletic team that plays pressure defense and likes to run right at you. They’re a very solid team, especially at home.” … “CSUMB is much improved from a year ago. Their record isn’t indicative of what they’re capable of achieving. Dana Andrews is a great scorer, and Alma Lopez is a quick guard that causes problems for opponents.”
