Jacks' basketball adds UCLA to schedule

It took 79 years to develop, but Humboldt State and UCLA will finally share the same basketball court when the Jacks travel south for a Nov. 9 exhibition game against the Bruins.

After signing the contract solidifying the matchup on Tuesday, Humboldt State Athletic Director Dan Collen began planning a special pre-game booster function to mark the occasion.

"This is an outstanding opportunity for Humboldt State men's basketball and our entire athletics program to share in the experience of taking on a top-caliber school," Collen said. "We hope our alumni, families and friends all come out to join us."

During the current decade, Humboldt State men's basketball has risen to join the ranks of the best NCAA Division II programs in the nation. The Lumberjacks have earned a berth in the postseason five of the past six years, advancing to the national semifinals in 2004.

UCLA's basketball tradition is long and storied, with 11 national championships earned, the most recent in 1995. In 2006 UCLA made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament with wins over Gonzaga, Memphis and Louisiana State before losing to the University of Florida, 73-57 in the Championship game.

"We'll do our best to give them a game that will help both of our programs get ready for the season," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "Our staff and players are extremely excited about the opportunity. We know our alumni and friends will be excited, too, and we invite them to join us at Pauley Pavilion in November.
