Jacks Fight to the Very Last

HSU's vaunted Men's Basketball Team mounted a stunning comeback in the second half of the championship round with the San Bernardino Coyotes Monday evening, but lost a 68-66 squeaker in the very last second.

The defeat smothered the Jacks' attempt to capture a second West Region championship in four years, and closed a 26 and four season, just shy of the 28 victories the Jacks posted in 2003/2004.

The Jacks had recorded a 95-81 victory over Grand Canyon University in the semi-final Saturday. HSU's Kevin Johnson was named the Western Region's player of the year during the NCAA regional tournament Humboldt State hosted in the East Gym last weekend.

HSU President Rollin Richmond praised the team's exceptional play during the tourney and congratulated Coach Tom Wood, who was named Coach of the Year by the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Regarding Humboldt State's host role, the President said, "I have received a number of compliments on our hospitality and tournament arrangements from NCAA officials and administrators, coaches, and fans. Our student athletes and colleagues have brought good and deserved attention to Humboldt State University and I am most grateful and proud. Our warm thanks to you all, and Go Jacks!"
