On the Air: Humboldt State men’s basketball home games and road games will be broadcast again this year on KATA, 1340 AM, the local ESPN radio affiliate. J.B. Mathers describes all the action from the East Gym and Dan Pambianco goes on the road to provide play-by-play for conference contests. The broadcasts begin 15 minutes prior to tip-off with the pregame show, which offers interviews and analysis. The broadcasts are also streamed through the hsujacks.com web site, making them available globally on the world wide web.
Lumberjacks Notes: As his senior season progresses, Grayson Moyer continues to move up in the all-time HSU record book. As of this week, he sits No. 4 all-time in career scoring with 1,311 points, and should eclipse the No. 3 all-time mark of 1,431 held by Kevin Johnson. Moyer is also is No. 3 in career assists with 319. …Devin Peal was instrumental in both wins last week, putting up 14 points and 32 points, respectively while playing with his heavily-taped left thumb. Also playing through injury was Cy Vandermeer, who despite re-injuring an ankle and being originally listed as doubtful for Saturday, scored 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds the latter evening. …With four games to play before the CCAA reaches its midpoint, the Lumberjacks stand second behind Cal State San Bernardino. HSU is 5-1 in league while the Coyotes are 6-0. …In the Jan. 8 NABC national poll, the Jacks were among others receiving votes. With 13 votes, HSU finished just out of the top 25. …A computer ratings service developed by a man named David Wilson has the Lumberjacks listed at No. 17 this week, up from the No. 28 position they held a week ago. That unofficial compilation can be found online at http://www.talismanred.com/ratings/hoops/. …The only poll that counts towards advancement into the postseason – the NCAA regional rankings – will be released for the first time this season on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
Opponents Notes: Chico State is 5-8 overall and 1-5 in league following three straight tough losses. Last weekend, the Wildcats lost to CCAA leader Cal State San Bernardino, and also dropped a three-point decision to Cal Poly Pomona. …Junior guard Darroll Phillips, who earned all-tournament honors at the DeBeni Holiday Classic last month, paced the Wildcats with a 17.2 points per game scoring average. Senior center Mike Martin is also in double figures with an average of 11.2 ppg. Key to the WIldcats’ offense is the play of junior point guard Justin Argenal, who has 64 assists to his credit this season. …Former Lumberjack assistant coach Josh Binderup is currently serving as an assistant coach for Chico State. …Cal State Stanislaus dropped a tough 83-74 overtime decision to league-leader CSU San Bernardino last week, falling to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in league. The Warriors have recorded CCAA wins over Chico State and CSU Monterey Bay. …Four Warriors are averaging in double figures scoring, led by senior guard Heath Colvin’s 15.2 points per game. Offensive production is also coming from Calvin Westbrook (13.2 ppg), former Lumberjack Rick Cardoso (12.2 ppg) and Duane Jones (11.8 ppg).
