Lumberjacks Notes: In only the second year of CCAA competition, the Jacks have already established rivalries with both of this week’s opponents. Part of that stems from the fact that HSU lost to both on the road last year, and in the case of CSU San Bernardino, the Jacks also were defeated in the regional championship game. …A glance at the team statistical leaders shows the Jacks topping two categories. They’re tied with Cal State L.A. for most points scored per game with a 79.2 average, and they also lead in assists to turnover ratio with a 1.17 mark. The other category HSU tops as a team is the standings, where the Jacks moved ahead of the pack with a pair of wins last week …Individually, Devin Peal has the league’s best scoring average at 18.6 points per game. Cy Vandermeer is second in blocked shots with 1.93 per game and Will Sheufelt stands second in assists/turnover ratio at 2.11. …The first NCAA regional rankings come out Wednesday, with the Jacks expected to be in the mix among the top eight in the west. They’ll strive to stay in that group and move up as high as possible before the end of the season and the postseason selections. …The new NABC national poll is due out Tuesday. Humboldt State was listed 22nd in last week’s rankings, moving back into the top 25 for the first time since preseason. …Despite winning their past five games, HSU head coach Tom Wood firmly believes the Jacks have plenty to work on. “Like all teams, we have issues that we need to clean up,” Wood said. “One of those was evident last week. We need to learn how to sustain or increase a lead last in the game so we don’t allow a team to catch up. We’re walking a tightrope in that area right now.”
Opponents Notes: Cal Poly Pomona has achieved a 6-7 overall record, but is right in the thick of the CCAA race with a 5-3 league mark. Last weekend, the Broncos earned a huge overtime victory over Cal State San Bernardino before falling to UC San Diego, 55-52 on the road. …Larry Gordon is Cal Poly Pomona’s statistical leader in both scoring (17.8 ppg) and rebounding (9.2 rpg). Angelo Tsagarakis, who hales from France and transferred in from Oregon State for his senior season, averages 15.2 points per game and has 38 three-pointers to his credit. …Cal State San Bernardino is 13-3 overall and 6-2 in league, having lost both conference games last weekend. Two of the Coyotes’ losses have been in overtime. …CSUSB’s leading scorers are Lance Ortiz and Michael Earl, who are both averaging 12.6 points per game. Marlon Pierce, a senior point guard, is averaging 12.4 points per contest. …Earl, a 6-8 transfer from Utah State, also leads his team in rebounding with 5.7 per game. He scored six points in 27 minutes in the loss to Cal Poly Pomona last week, but wasn’t listed in the following night’s boxscore for the game vs. UC San Diego. No word on his status for this week was available Monday. …The Coyotes were listed No. 5 in last week’s NABC national poll.
Woods’ Wisdom: “This is a huge weekend from a preparation standpoint. Both teams play unique defenses that require a lot of preparation. We have to be creative about finding ways to get good shots.” … “(Pomona’s) Gordon is as good of a forward as there is in this league. He presents a serious challenge to defend.” … “San Bernardino has been at the top of the rankings this year for a reason. They play very ball-hawkish defense and get a hand on every pass you try to get into the paint.”
