Jacks Roll On With Win Over Simpson

ARCATA — Every active player on the roster scored and all saw significant playing time in helping Humboldt State to a 86-65 win over Simpson University in men's basketball action Saturday.

Elliot Babcock-Krenk scored 11 points, and teammates Mike Kehrig, Kyle Baxter and Kevin Atkins all added 10 in helping the Jacks improve to 3-2 overall. Justin Sparks scored 15 points, while Glenn Payne and Andrew Schritter each added 11 for the Red Hawks, who remained winless at 0-6.

The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 20-point lead midway through the first half, going up 26-6 on Ernie Spada’s three-pointer. The Red Hawks whittled the advantage down to 11 points on Andrew Barclay’s dunk as the half wound down, but David Broome drained a jumper as time expired to give the Jacks a 39-26 lead.

In the second half the Jacks again opened up a comfortable margin, pulling ahead by 29 points on Baxter’s layup with 13 minutes, 25 seconds remaining. They kept a sizeable lead while the HSU coaching staff frequently employed a variety of lineups throughout.

HSU claimed a rebounding advantage for the first time in the early season, out-boarding Simpson, 86-65. Babcock-Krenk and Atkins shared team-high honors with nine rebounds each, and Baxter and Jameson Figgatt both contributed four assists.

Humboldt State is back on the court today for another preseason matchup, hosting William Jessup at 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
