Jacks to host NCAA West Region tourney

ARCATA – With one tournament currently in progress, Humboldt State softball learned today that it will be hosting another next week when the NCAA announced that the West Region Division II Championships will be played in Arcata.

Humboldt State was expected to be named host when the final NCAA Division II West Region poll came out Tuesday, listing HSU again at No. 1. The Lumberjacks also moved up one spot to No. 5 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 poll released Wednesday.

The Lumberjacks (47-15 overall, 45-14 in-region) have led the west region for the past six weeks. HSU is currently hosting the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament, scheduled to run through Saturday.

Next week's West Region Championships will begin Wednesday and run through Sunday, May 11. Seedings for the eight-team event will be announced this Sunday.

Seven of the 10 teams listed in this week’s regional poll are affiliated with the CCAA, along with the top five team listed. Cal State Monterey Bay climbed its way to second with a 33-22 overall and 32-30 in-region record. Cal State Stanislaus falls just behind Monterey Bay with a 27-21 overall and 25-19 in-region record, while UC San Diego fell two spots to fourth place with a 29-19 overall and 27-18 in-region record.

Humboldt State jumped one spot to No. 5 in the NFCA poll after three weeks in sixth place. Cal State Stanislaus is HSU’s lone partner representing the CCAA listed in this week’s poll at No. 19.
