Kenny Werner Trio to present Jazz Concert and Master Class

The Redwood Jazz Alliance and the HSU Music Department are proud to present an evening of jazz with the world-renowned Kenny Werner Trio. Fresh from the Green Mill in Chicago, Werner's piano trio, featuring Johannes Weidenmueller on bass and Ari Hoenig on drums, will play Monday night, September 25th, at 7:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall on the campus of Humboldt State University in Arcata. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors and students with ID.

Werner and his trio, recently noted by the New York Times for their “nearly miraculous rhythm and tempo changes,” play some of the most lyrical and inventive music in all of jazz today. A veteran of collaborations with Charles Mingus, Joe Lovano, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and Chris Potter (among scores of others), Werner is a true virtuoso, with more than 20 highly-regarded recordings to his name. His latest album, “Democracy” (whose title track is a nod to Pacifica Radio host Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now!”), was recorded with an all-star quintet last year at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club and released in August, 2006.

In addition to his gifts as a pianist, Werner has taught at the New School University, been artist-in-residence at NYU and the Berklee School of Music, and authored Effortless Mastery, a book-length meditation on the physical, technical, and spiritual aspects of creativity. On Tuesday, September 26th at 10:00 a.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall, Werner will conduct a master class on the principles of “effortless mastery.” This event is FREE and open to the public.
