Lumberjack Ad Sales Hit New Heights

Arcata—In a time of tight newspaper budgets, the Lumberjack student newspaper set a new record for advertising sales for its first issue of the year. Student ad representatives sold a total of $11,800 worth of advertisements, about $600 more than the previous record.

The Lumberjack is a student-run, student-produced weekly newspaper that publishes every Wednesday during the fall and spring terms at Humboldt State University.

This year the Lumberjack plans to launch online advertisements for the first time on its web site, thejackonline.org. The newspaper is produced as part of a class offered by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. This year, advertising sales are expected to make up about 83 percent of the cost of producing the newspaper. Another 16 percent is expected to 16 percent come from Instructionally Related Activity fees.

In the spring, The Lumberjack won a First Place Mark of Excellence Award from the Society for Professional Journalists for Region 11, which includes California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Hawaii, for an article titled “Un-Dam the Klamath Deal Struck,” written and reported by journalism major Allie Hostler, a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe.
