Natalie Mitchell Crowned Division II Regional Champion

The Cal Poly Humboldt triathlon team showcased a strong performance at the NCAA Heartland Triathlon Cup, West Region national qualifier.

The event, held in Springfield, Missouri, saw the Lumberjacks finish 9th out of 16 teams overall, and notably, the squad secured 4th place among Division II competitors. Natalie Mitchell led the way, capturing the Division II individual title with a stellar overall time of 1:07:31.

Mitchell, a standout for the Lumberjacks, impressed in every segment of the race, starting with a swift swim time of 10:25, followed by a strong 21.8 mph average bike pace, and closing with a 21:11 run at a pace of 6:49 per mile. Her dominant performance earned her the top spot among Division II athletes and 25th overall in the women's field.

Cal Poly Humboldt's depth was further demonstrated by key contributions from other team members. Averill Payne delivered a commendable race, finishing in 1:11:07 and placing 42nd overall. Poppy Edge added to the Lumberjacks' tally with a final time of 1:13:59, continuing the team's momentum with another solid effort.

Eve Wendley completed her race in 1:17:39, while Camille Shaver and Evelyn Higgins crossed the finish line in close succession with times of 1:21:05 and 1:21:19, respectively. Alexa Blakey rounded out the Humboldt contingent with a final time of 1:25:39, showcasing the endurance and grit of the entire team.

Although Farrah Tyler did not finish, the collective effort of the team ensured that Cal Poly Humboldt remained competitive throughout the event. 

With Mitchell's Division II title, the Lumberjacks have solidified their position as a rising force in the collegiate triathlon scene. The team's performance at this West Region national qualifier sets the stage for a promising finish to the season as they aim for national recognition.

The NCAA Heartland Triathlon Cup was a crucial qualifier, bringing together some of the top collegiate triathlon talent. Cal Poly Humboldt's showing underscores the program's growth and potential for future success on the national stage.
