Online Orientation to Virtual Classrooms

As Humboldt State continues to offer more online courses, the College of eLearning and Extended Education created a feature designed to give students an orientation for online courses and to point them to campus academic resources.

Launched this past semester, eLearning 101 offers seven modules that focus on everything from tutorials on Moodle (HSU’s learning management system) to time management skills.

“I truly believe we have the power to create an environment where students can succeed at the same rates in online classes as they do in traditional classrooms,” says Pam Dougherty, an eLearning and Extended Education specialist.

eLearning 101 underscores the push by the California State University system to improve graduation rates by offering students better access to courses—especially core ones necessary to graduate—that are usually full or those scheduled at inconvenient times. HSU offers approximately 125 online courses; 46 percent of HSU students have taken at least one online course.

Getting courses is one thing, but doing well in a virtual classroom is another. “In general, college undergraduates succeed at lower rates in online courses than face-to-face courses,” says Dougherty.

Research shows students cited three reasons they failed an online course: They had no idea how much work it would be; they fell behind, and they didn’t know where to go for help.

One key solution appears to be an interactive overview. In fact, students who complete an online orientation tend to do better in their online courses.

eLearning 101 covers technological basics such as using Moodle, how to upload assignments, how a course is set up and developed, and using a discussion forum. Students can also learn more about paying attention to due dates and also time management, which, as Dougherty points out, can be especially challenging when there is no physical classroom. There’s also information on support services and resources on campus.

eLearning 101 is now available to all HSU students, staff, and faculty for Spring 2016. To enroll, go to learn.humboldt.edu/course/view.php?id=1696.

Faculty teaching online and hybrid courses are encouraged to include a link to eLearning 101 in their course as a graded or extra-credit activity to improve participation.

Those who complete the orientation will receive an eLearning 101 Achievement Badge and a Certificate of Completion. The badge will automatically be posted to the student’s Moodle page, and the certificate can be downloaded and saved. This orientation is voluntary, and will be facilitated by HSU eLearning staff.
