Prescott Honored By CCAA And Honda

ARCATA — Humboldt State softball pitcher Lizzy Prescott has been recognized for her accomplishments again, this time with two prestigious awards on the conference and national level.

Following her remarkable performance in leading the Jacks to a national championship, Prescott has been selected as the softball nominee for the 2007-08 Division II Athlete of the Year, as chosen by the board of directors for the National Collegiate Women Sports Award. American Honda Motor Co., Inc. will donate $1,000 to Humboldt State women's athletics in recognition of Prescott's candidacy, and if she selected for the overall award, the company will donate an additional $5,000 to HSU.

The senior has also been selected as the California Collegiate Athletic Association Female Athlete of the Year by a vote of the league's sports information directors. Chico State men's track and field athlete Scott Bauhs was chosen as CCAA Male Athlete of the Year.

Prescott’s outstanding efforts at the NCAA Division II Softball Championships was a key to Humboldt State claiming the national title. Prescott pitched every inning of all four games at the tournament, including a 10-inning game and a 17-inning marathon. In all, she pitched 41 innings, posting a 4-0 record, allowing only one run while striking out 52 batters and walking none.

In the semifinal game, Prescott held No. 1 ranked Lock Haven University to one hit in hurling a 17-inning complete game, striking out an NCAA record 21 batters and walking none as the Jacks took a 1-0 victory. She also pitched the complete game win in the championship contest, shutting out Emporia State, 1-0.

In recent weeks, Prescott has also been honored by two different groups as All-American, along with being selected CCAA and West Region Pitcher of the Year. Following the national championships finale, she was chosen as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
