Chamber Groups Play Rare Classics

Arcata - Redwood Coast musicians comprising a trio of chamber groups will perform rare works by Mozart, Beethoven and Bach and classic ragtime numbers on Sunday, January 20, at 8:00 p.m. in Humboldt State University’s Fulkerson Recital Hall.

In this second concert of local ensembles sponsored by HSU’s Department of Music, PianoVoce and the Humboldt Camerata will present works by Mozart and Beethoven rarely or never before heard on a North Coast stage. In addition, Trombones @ 4 will make its first concert appearance.

The community musicians making up the groups hail from McKinleyville, Blue Lake, Kneeland, Arcata, Eureka and Bayside. Many have other musical affiliations, among them the Eureka Symphony, Humboldt Light Opera Company, College of the Redwoods Big Band, Humboldt Brass Band, the All Seasons Orchestra and various church music organizations.

PianoVoce will feature works combining piano and voice. Pianists Nancy Correll and Annette Gurnee Hull will perform a buoyant masterwork for two pianists at a single piano, Mozart’s merry-hearted Sonata for Piano Four Hands in B-flat Major. Joining them will be noted artist and narrator Richard Duning, who will introduce the performers and the work. Ms. Correll and Ms. Hull are long-time staff pianists with the HSU Department of Music choral and vocal recital programs, as well as with the Humboldt Light Opera.

The Humboldt Camerata will play another seldom-heard work, Beethoven’s Sextex for Winds. The musicians include
Ken Ayoob, Interim Dean of Humboldt State’s College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, Gayle Gastineau Ayoob, Virginia Ryder, former HSU executive Val Phillips, Justin Sousa and Wendell Row.

Trombones @ 4 will conclude the concert with an eclectic program spanning Bach, Scott Joplin, Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust” and Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight.” George Epperson, Doug Beckstead, Doug Hendricks and Dick LaForge are the trombonists.

Tickets are $8.00 general, $3.00 for students and seniors and available from the HSU Ticket Office at 826-3928 or at the door. Details at http://HSUMusic.blogspot.com.
