Recharge with Purpose this Spring Break

Before Spring Break, consider balancing downtime with productive habits like reviewing notes from the first weeks of classes, planning upcoming assignments and deadlines, and using available resources like academic advising, tutoring, and Student Health & Wellbeing Services to stay on track and reduce stress.
Spring Break is almost here, and whether students are packing a bag, powering down, or powering through, March 16–20 offers a well-earned pause in the middle of the semester.

With residence halls open and a quieter campus atmosphere, it’s the perfect moment to rest, reset, travel safely, reconnect with family, or get a head start before the second half of the semester kicks into high gear.

Here are some tips to recharge with purpose:

Maintaining routines around sleep, nutrition, and physical activity over the break can also help students return to campus focused and energized for the weeks leading up to finals. Spring Break can also be a meaningful time for reflection. The first half of the semester often moves quickly as students adjust to new classes, professors, and commitments. A few quiet moments to evaluate what’s working—and what may need adjustment—can make a significant difference.

For students who remain on or near campus, Humboldt’s natural surroundings offer restorative opportunities. A walk through the redwoods, time spent on the coast, or simply unplugging from screens can reduce stress and improve focus. Students staying on campus can take a walk in the Arcata Community Forest or participate in campus recreational activities at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center in Eureka.

If students are traveling, it’s essential to review safety considerations, including keeping up with car maintenance and checking road conditions, budget thoughtfully, and plan for a smooth return so they’re ready to re-engage academically.

Spring Break is also an ideal time to look ahead. Registration for upcoming terms, summer internship or job applications, research opportunities, and campus employment deadlines may be approaching. Set aside even an hour or two to update a résumé, explore career pathways through the Career Development Center, which will be open during the break and will host a Resume Refresh event on Monday, March 23, or connect with a faculty mentor, which can position students for success beyond this semester.

Ultimately, the goal of Spring Break isn’t to fill every moment with productivity—it’s to return feeling renewed and prepared. With intentional rest, thoughtful planning, and supportive conversations, students can step into the second half of the semester with clarity, confidence, and momentum.
