Road/home contests up next for women's squad

ARCATA — California Collegiate Athletic Conference games resume this week when the Lumberjacks first travel to face Sonoma State, then come home to take on UC San Diego. The Jacks kick off a doubleheader on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in Rohnert Park. They’re in the East Gym on Saturday, hosting UC San Diego at the same time as the top half of a twinbill that is followed by the men’s game.

Lumberjacks Notes: Last week’s final non-conference game featured an all-too familiar patter, one that has the Jacks leading only to fall short at the very end. This time, a putback with two seconds remaining lifted Saint Martin’s to a 65-63 win over the Jacks. …In their five losses, the Jacks have scored an average of 5.8 points fewer than opponents. In their four wins, HSU has a 28.2 points scoring margin edge over its opponents. … “We’re looking at the way we finish a game, and what we can do to come out on top in the close ones,” HSU head coach Joddie Gleason said. “One of the areas we’ve worked on is offensive rebounding, and we’re also looking at taking good shots once we’re ahead.” …Positive news came this week with the availability of sophomore guard Taylor Kilgore, who has five games because of mononucleosis. Kilgore is back practicing with the team, but is still recovering some of the conditioning she lost during her battle with the illness. She is expected back in the lineup for both games this week. …Frequent rotation changes and spot-filling has characterized the Jacks’ early schedule, with Kilgore, Page Peterson and Biava Arganda all forced to miss playing time. With everyone healthy, Gleason expects to have more flexibility in conforming her lineup to specific opponents and matchups.

Opponent’s Notes: Sonoma State has leaped out to an 8-1 start, and is 2-0 in league games. …The Seawolves have four players averaging in double figures, led by returning senior Danae Wellander, who averaged 14.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. …Sonoma State is coming off a pair of holiday tournament wins, including a 68-67 overtime decision against St. Cloud State. The team’s lone loss is to nationally ranked Seattle Pacific. …UC San Diego is 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the early CCAA standings. The Tritons defeated Western Washington, 79-76, in overtime last Saturday, one night after falling to Seattle Pacific, 75-65. …Meaghan Noud is UCSD’s top scoring threat, with an average of 14.3 points per game.

Head-to-Head: HSU trails Sonoma State in the all-time series, 26-32, after splitting last year’s two games. The Jacks lost twice to UCSD last year, falling to 1-4 all-time against the Tritons.

Gleason’s Comments: “Sonoma State has experienced players. They’re a balanced, smart, very solid team. Our hope is to get them running up and down and subbing, so we can challenge their depth.” … “UCSD has top tier players who play a lot of minutes. (Junior forward) Michelle Osier and Meaghan Noud both put up big numbers.”
