Rolland named female scholar-athlete of the year

Humboldt State track and field athlete Megan Rolland is California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

It was announced at the CCAA Executive Council Meetings in La Jolla in June.

The award is voted on and selected by the Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) from the conference's 12 institutions.

A senior from Emmett, Idaho, Rolland concluded a decorated collegiate career this past spring by earning All-American honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase following a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Her time of 10:27.77 bettered her own school record.

Rolland is a three-time All-CCAA selection in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, twice earning the league title, and a three-time national-qualifier in the event. Additionally, she earned all-conference and all-region accolades, and qualified for the cross country national championships.

Rolland also achieved success in the classroom as she will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a nursing degree in the fall. Her list of honors include: a five-time Humboldt State Presidential Scholar recipient, the Phyllis E. Poska Memorial Nursing scholarship recipient; Robert W. Campbell scholarship recipient; Jayo Family Memorial scholarship recipient; Partnership Campaign recipient and Sue Grigsby Distance running scholarship recipient; 2009-10 Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award recipient.

The Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award is given annually in recognition of CCAA student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom, community and in their sport. The respective athletics department members in consultation with the school's FARs select and vote on the award.

Assisting in the community, Rolland gave her time to volunteering at the 2010 Eureka Public Health Fair, and serving as lead organizer for the Humboldt County Valentine's Day “Love Run” and organizing two high school track meets.

Following graduation, Rolland is planning a nursing career in a critical care/trauma unit, with the ultimate goal of working in underdeveloped countries. She also plans to continue athletic training.

To be nominated for the CCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, must have a 3.5 grade-point average at a conference institution, completed final season of eligibility and participated in a CCAA-sponsored sport.
