Regatta Notes: Western Washington, the dominant rowing program in the west and the nation in recent years, is the defending NCRC champion. The Vikings haven’t lost to an NCAA Division II program since 2004. …Also competing alongside HSU and WWU will be boats from Willamette University, University of Puget Sound, Lewis & Clark College, Pacific Lutheran University, and Seattle Pacific. …Most of the rowers competing in the championships have already tried the waters of Lake Vancouver, the host venue for the NCRC Invitational on April. 5. …The NCRC Championships select all-conference honors for individual athletes, along with choosing a coach of the year award.
Lumberjacks Notes: Humboldt State hopes to improve on last year’s disappointing finishes in both the varsity eight and four races. The Jacks placed sixth in the eight race and seventh in the four a year ago. …Last year’s event also featured an impressive run by the Jacks’ novice eight crew. In that race, HSU claimed a decisive nine-second victory over runnerup Western Washington. …HSU’s successful varsity four boat has enticed Coach Robin Meiggs to take a look at lineups this week, and possibly makes some adjustments. “The eight is where we need to focus, and we’ll look at some of those people who have been rowing strong in the four and see if we should move them into the eight,” Meiggs said. “In rowing, a couple of individuals in a boat can make a huge difference in the success.” … In last week’s NCAA West Region poll, Humboldt State listed No. 2 behind Western Washington in the varsity eight, varsity four, and team categories. Just behind HSU was Seattle Pacific, followed by UC San Diego. In the most recent US Rowing rankings, which lists only the top five, the Jacks were included among “others receiving votes.”
