Scholars Visit, Lead Seminar Series

Dr. Richard Berrett, the current California State University Faculty Service-Learning Scholar, and Dr. Tom Carey, the Visiting Senior Scholar in the Chancellor’s Office of the California State University, will each be facilitating interactive presentations for HSU faculty on April 4 and April 6.

The free presentations, co-sponsored by HSU Faculty Development and Service Learning, will comprise a collaborative seminar series focusing on the Scholarship of Engagement and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Richard Berrett will present his workshop, "The Scholarship of Engagement," on Wednesday, April 4, from 9:00-10:00 am, in Nelson Hall East 120. This workshop will explore how to design engaged research that meets the mission of the campus and the RTP process, as well as community needs. Dr. Berrett, the current CSU Faculty Service-Learning Scholar, is a family science professional with over 35 years of successful local, regional, national and international experience in a variety of education, non-profit, business and government settings.

Dr. Tom Carey will present "Supporting Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in the CSU," on Friday, April 6, from 1:15-2:15 pm in Nelson Hall East 113. This session will outline opportunities for faculty to develop scholarly work in teaching and learning, and then explore these opportunities through interactive discussion.

Dr. Carey is Chief Learning Officer of MERLOT.org, co-director of the ELIXR research project, and Interim Team Leader for the Transforming Course Design initiative in the California State University. In addition, Dr. Carey is a member of the Going Public Committee of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Research in Learning Technology.

Participants in Rich Berrett’s workshop on April 4 are asked to bring: the key requirements for their RTP files, one example of typical published research in their field and one example of research in their field that is recognized as contributing to the public good.
