Humboldt State Sociology Professor Mary Virnoche is a contributor to the current issue of the Sociological Practice Newsletter, in which she reports that graduate level research combined with applied field experience enables HSU master's degree professionals to effect real social change.
Each master's candidate completes at least 240 hours of field work, Dr. Virnoche notes. One alum developed a large-scale community survey in association with Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County. Professor Virnoche quotes Judith Little, chair of the Department of Sociology: "The field experiences are a win-win model for the students and the community. Our students offer the community a great resource for trained sociological expertise in action. They address real social issues and meet real needs."
