Softball Ranked Top in the West

ARCATA – After finishing their spring break trip with six wins in eight games, Humboldt State’s softball team tops the first NCAA Division West Region II poll at No. 1, while climbing two spots to No. 20 on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 National Rankings.

Wednesday’s release of the West Region rankings is the first of the spring. Five more of the polls will be released on a weekly basis prior to the May 3 selection of the eight schools that will advance to the NCAA’s regional postseason tournament.

In the inaugural regional poll, Hawaii Pacific and fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association school UC San Diego hold the next two spots behind the Jacks, who enter the week with a 25-12 overall record and 23-11 in-region mark.

In the NFCA rankings, the Lumberjacks moved up from the No. 22 position they held last week to share the No. 20 spot with St. Edwards (25-6). UC San Diego ranks above HSU at the No. 10 NFCA slot with a 21-9 overall record.

HSU’s next action is this weekend when the Lumberjacks travel to Turlock to compete in the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.
