Track & Field: Solis posts provisional qualifier at Stanford

PALO ALTO — Humboldt State's Jesus Solis blasted a season-best time of 9 minutes, 17.94 seconds in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase at Saturday's Stanford Invitational, achieving a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II Championships.

Solis made the most of the top competition he was facing, taking 20 seconds off his previous best time this year. The race earned him seventh place overall in the field of 19, trailing Chico State's Tim Tollefson and five athletes representing NCAA Division I programs.

At the Willamette Invitational in Monmouth, Ore., on Saturday, Humboldt State's Thomas Wilhelm took seventh in the field of 43 in the men's shot put with a distance of 44 feet even. The Lumberjacks' Brittany Peterson took third in the women's pole vault, achieving a clearance of 10-6.

Nick Knipe has a season-best throw of 131-5 in the men's discus, and Megan Rolland followed up her sensational steeplechase race from Friday, placing ninth among 40 athletes in the women's 800 meters with a hand-time of 2:23.8.

HSU will compete again Friday and Saturday, traveling to the Johnny Mathis Invitational in San Francisco.
