All securely packaged, non-expired food items collected here on campus will be distributed to 10,000 low-income children, families, people with disabilities and seniors in Humboldt County.
Foods that families and children need most include:
- Canned tuna and chicken
- Beans and rice
- Canned soups and stews
- Canned fruit
- Boxed and canned juices
- Peanut butter
- Breakfast cereals
- Pasta
- Canned vegetables
- Nutritional supplements or instant breakfast drinks
Student clubs, academic departments, and other campus organizations are invited to donate as a group; the group that donates the greatest quantity of high-quality food will have the opportunity to sit down to a delicious meal with President Richmond next semester. There is no limit to the number of people in a contributing organization, but only ten individuals from that group will be hosted at the mean.
“It is a great opportunity to support the Humboldt Community. You can take direct action to feed people,” said Sean Cohen, an HSU Service Learning Intern.
People are encouraged to donate either at the Service Learning Center (NHW 139) or in food barrels placed in seven other campus locations: in the lobby of the Student Business Services Building, outside the Clubs Office in the University Center’s South Lounge, Harry Griffith Hall, Founders Hall, the Library, Siemens Hall and the 2nd floor of the J.
To receive credit towards the “Hunger Fighter Challenge” luncheon, please place food donations in a strong bag and attach a note with the name of your organization and contact information.
