Alum Headlines HSU’s International Education Week

Humboldt State alumnus and author Richard Slimbach (’73, Sociology) will keynote the Global Studies theme of the campus’s annual International Education Week Nov. 13-16.

The event is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to ready Americans for globalization.

Slimbach, professor of Global Studies and coordinator of the Global Studies Program at Azusa Pacific University, is the author of Becoming World Wise. He holds a Ph.D. in comparative and international education from UCLA and is founder of Azusa Pacific’s Transformational Urban Leadership program, focused on the planet’s one billion slum dwellers.

Following graduation from Humboldt State University, Slimbach served in a number of community-based organizations working with migrant farmers, homeless men, border communities and Vietnamese refugees. His teaching specialties include urban sociology, applied anthropology, global issues and international education program design.

HSU’s International Education Week comprises panel discussions on current events and globalization; workshops on studying, working and living abroad; special presentations on various countries; and “food, fashion and fun” from around the world. All events are free and open to the general public.

Professor Beth Wilson, Chair of Humboldt State’s Department of Economics and a specialist in international economics who served in the Peace Corps in the late 1980s in Niger, calls International Education Week “a great opportunity to learn about international issues. We are fortunate to have an amazing array of events from lectures and student panels to informational meetings on study abroad and the Peace Corps to a Fashion Show. There is something for everyone!”
