Firefighters will extinguish room-size burns, with a final burn scheduled later in the day.
The training will be conducted in compliance with all burning regulations, and the Fire District has obtained burn permits through the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District. The deteriorating dwelling has been examined by a certified California state asbestos inspector and all suspected asbestos materials have been removed in preparation for the controlled burns.
Arcata Fire officials advise neighborhood and campus residents in the vicinity who are sensitive to smoke or are concerned about inhaling smoke to close all windows and doors during the burns. Neighborhood and campus residents and Humboldt State housing authorities have been notified that the training will generate smoke and some ash.
Further information is available from the Arcata Fire Department Training Division at 707-825-2000 and from the Humboldt State University Police Department at 707-826-5555. If the training has to be postponed, neighborhood and campus residents and the press will be notified.
