O’Toole’s subject will be “Transparency: How Leaders Create a Culture of Candor.” His most recent book is Transparency (2008), with Warren Bennis and Daniel Goleman.
The writer of 16 books, O’Toole is the Daniels Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business. He previously held the University Associates’ Chair of Management at the University of Southern California’s business school, and was executive director of the Leadership Institute and editor of New Management magazine.
O’Toole earned a doctorate of social anthropology from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. Formerly he was director of the Twenty-Year Forecast Project, interpreting social, political and economic change for the top management of 30 of the largest U.S. corporations. From 1994 to 1997, he was executive vice president of the Aspen Institute. He also served on the board of directors of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
In 2007, O’Toole was named one of the “100 most influential people in business ethics” by the editors of Ethisphere and one of “the top 100 thought leaders on leadership” by Leadership Excellence magazine.
The annual lecture hosted by Humboldt State’s School of Business is funded by alumnus Po Chung (’69) to honor former HSU Professor Frank Watson. Chung is founder and past chairman and chief executive officer of DHL International. He was named to HSU’s roster of Distinguished Alumni in 2005.
The lecture series provides an ongoing discussion of business ethics and corporate responsibility. The March 5 event is free and open to the public.
