Humboldt also earned a place in the magazine’s 2026 Best Colleges for Your Tuition (and Tax) Dollars: West ranking, placing No. 44 of 215 colleges. That list evaluates institutions on access, affordability, student outcomes, and their promotion of public service.

As part of its Top 100 Rural Colleges list, Washington Monthly highlighted Humboldt’s student support programs that remove barriers to enrolling and graduating. Those programs include peer mentoring and coordinated academic guidance as they adjust to university life.
Schools were evaluated using measures tied to social mobility, including Pell Grant enrollment, net price, student loan debt, and alumni earnings. The methodology also considers how many students come from within the state and how many graduates remain there. Additional weight is given to degrees that prepare students for high-demand work in rural areas, including education and natural resources management.
The recognition comes as rural students nationwide continue to face barriers to attending and graduating from college. Washington Monthly notes that rural students graduate from high school at rates above the national average. Even so, they are less likely to enroll in college and face a greater risk of leaving before earning a degree. Regional universities can help close that gap by offering accessible education alongside services designed to support students as they work toward their degree.
At Humboldt, some resources focus on removing financial barriers for local students. The Humboldt First Scholarship, for example, provides $1,000 per year for up to four years to first-time freshmen who graduated from a high school in Humboldt, Del Norte, Mendocino, or Trinity counties.
Washington Monthly has published its annual college guide since 2005, ranking institutions according to their contributions to students and the public good.
