The Humboldt Orientation Program, which begins Wednesday, Aug. 19, is anticipated to bring more than 500 additional vehicles to campus. In addition, on Thursday, Aug. 20, and Friday, Aug. 21, South Rossow and the entire length of Harpst streets will be closed for repaving beginning 6 a.m. on Thursday. Paving is expected to be completed on Friday evening.

On Thursday and Friday, traffic on Harpst Street between LK Wood and B Street will be closed to all vehicles, and access to the Plant Operations yard and the Harry Griffith Hall parking lots will not be permitted. Traffic entering campus to park in the big Mai Kai and Student Services Staff lots via L.K. Wood Boulevard will be routed in and out through the Redwood Manor Apartments. The Parking and Commuter Services booth on North Rossow Street will be open. Housing check-ins are expected to increase the number of vehicles utilizing the Redwood Manor driveway, and UPD and Housing staff will be assisting with traffic as needed.

Rossow Street is scheduled to open by the first day of classes, Monday, Aug. 24. Harpst Street will also reopen to one-way, inbound traffic beginning the same day. The reopening will close general access to campus via the Redwood Manor driveway. Harpst Street will remain open to one-way traffic into the campus through the remainder of the semester.

To help alleviate the congestion, HSU Parking and Commuter Services have announced a special opportunity to try out the Jack Pass for a week. Arcata-Mad River Transit, Eureka Transit, and the Redwood Transit System will provide free bus service to HSU-affiliated customers, to and from Humboldt State, from Wednesday, Aug. 19 through Friday, Aug. 28. Coverage extends from the south to Scotia, north to Trinidad, and east to Willow Creek. The Jack Pass, available to all HSU students, staff and faculty, allows unlimited local transportation on all three major bus lines. All students pay for the service through their campus fees, while campus employees may purchase a one-semester pass for $60.

Overall, the campus is losing several parking spaces in the Mai Kai parking lot and along the corner of Harpst Street and L.K. Wood Boulevard, due to the construction on the new College Creek Apartments. The Redwood Manor apartments, located along L.K. Wood Boulevard, are slated for removal in 2010, which will allow for increased parking. Taken together, the construction of the apartments along with the removal of Redwood Manor,is expected to net housing for more than 350 students, a major increase over current availability.

HSU Parking and Commuter Services offer the following tips for avoiding traffic delays.
• Allow more time to arrive on campus

• Choose Union Street to enter campus.

• Utilize the Jack Pass, which is $60 per semester for staff and faculty.

• Between Aug. 19 and 28, all HSU-related passengers can ride the HTA and RTS buses free of charge. This is a great opportunity to try out the Jack Pass without paying $60. Riders must present a complimentary Jack Pass, available from University Police or the Parking Booth located on North Rossow Street.

• Carpool, stop by the Parking Booth on North Rossow with your 2-3 passengers still on board, and you will be given a day pass to park at any HSU metered spot for free.

• Bike to campus

• Utilize the 14th and Union Lots on Aug. 20 and 21.
