Since 1973, Osprey magazine, the award-winning student-run magazine at Cal Poly Humboldt, has been an integral part of the community, providing students with hands-on experience in journalism.

Students navigate diverse roles, such as editors, writers, designers, and photographers. Osprey has received multiple awards, including Best Photo and Best Student Magazine from the Society of Professional Journalists and the California College Media Association. The magazine has published stories about an unsolved murder, the end of Humboldt's football program, hazing within the university's soccer team, and local environmental issues, solidifying the Osprey’s reputation for thought-provoking content.

Osprey will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Thursday, Dec. 7, from 4-6 p.m. in the Goodwin Forum in Nelson Hall East. Community members, including students, alumni, faculty, and Osprey supporters, are invited to commemorate five decades of quality journalism.

There will be a photo booth and Osprey trivia, with catered food and refreshments. The festivities will be a tribute to the vision of the magazine's founder, Howard Seemann, conveyed by Robin Hollyburgh, who worked on Osprey in 1975.

One of her most memorable contributions to the publication was in the third edition in 1975 where Hollyburgh wrote about the "Suburban Refugees," members of the Nor Cal Miners Association. The miners took up residence on gold mining territory in Trinity County in response to The Mining Law of 1872, “which declared all valuable mineral deposits in land belonging to the United States to be free and open to exploration and purchase,” according to the Bureau of Land Management.

“I even crossed the river up high in one of those cable cars,” said Hollyburgh.

Currently under the guidance of professor Jessie Cretser-Hartenstein, Osprey consistently raises the bar in reporting and investigating significant issues that impact the local community.
