Centennial Celebration Continues with Events, Speaker Series

Humboldt State's 2013-14 Centennial celebration continues throughout spring 2014, with events and activities honoring the university's first 100 years. From a Centennial composer's concert to a Dance of the Century, here's a look at some upcoming events.

February

Michael Eric Dyson, author of Come Hell or High Water: Hurricane Katrina and the Color of Disaster and Can you Hear Me Now? speaks at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 in Van Duzer Theatre as part of the Centennial Speaker Series. On Feb. 22 at 7 p.m., the university kicks-off its Centennial Beer Showcase at Siren’s Song Tavern in Eureka. The event features speciality Centennial beers: Lost Coast Brewery Big Axe Ale, Six Rivers Tin Pants, Mad River Hibiscus Centennial Ale and Redwood Curtain Centennial Jack Ale. There will also be appetizers and a live band.

March

Throughout March, the Library showcases its programs with a variety of talks, displays and an open house—part of the university’s Centennial Showcase series. If you missed the first beer showcase, don’t worry. The second one will take place at 7 p.m. March 8 at Humbrews in Arcata.

HSU musicians come together April 25 for a special concert at 8 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall featuring original works. The celebration continues through the evening with Founders Day, the Centennial finale. Highlights include a time capsule burial; “Ideafest,” showcasing student projects and research and a Dance of the Century, featuring a chance to dress up in costumes from the last 100 years.

May

Centennial wouldn’t be complete without a centennial send-off to the class of 2014. Join family and friends on May 17 in Redwood Bowl for special Centennial Commencement ceremonies honoring the New Century Class of 2014. The ceremony will include a new recessional composed by music professor Gil Cline and a new ceremonial mace designed by art professor Kris Patzlaff. Limited edition collector stamps will be for sale at both ceremonies.
