Black, an HSU Wildlife Professor, will present highlights from his more than 100 investigations of wildlife from the Amazon to the Arctic, including findings from long-term studies of river otters, Steller’s jays, and wild goose populations.

Black made news for his study of river otter populations in which he enlisted students, hikers, fishermen and other community members to determine the health of the animals locally. He has employed the same inclusive strategy to study eight other species.

Black’s study of the Steller’s jays and their social relationships has been well documented. He joined the Humboldt State faculty in 1998 and has published more than 100 papers and books during his tenure.

Black’s lecture is part of a speaker series hosted by HSU’s Distinguished Faculty Award winners. Recipients recognized at the annual HSU Honors Dinner present a free public lecture.
