At Humboldt, sustainability isn’t limited to one week. Through the “Earth week every week” mindset, students practice social and environmental responsibility year-round, whether through campus programs and activities, daily choices, or the Graduation Pledge. Earth Week in April is a chance to reconnect, share ideas, and celebrate that ongoing commitment.
Organized by the Associated Students (AS) Committee on Environmental Affairs with support from the Office of Sustainability, this year’s Earth Week events showcase how students, faculty, staff, and community partners are working together to emphasize how sustainability shows up across campus life.
“This year, the campus is hosting such a wide variety of events! I think this reflects the current moment and the broadening of what it means to participate in a global environmental, sustainability, or climate justice movement; that there is a place for everyone, and our work is intersecting. It's exciting to see our campus embrace Earth Day this year in a way that is so expansive and inclusive,” says Katie Koscielak, sustainability analyst and advisor to the AS Committee on Environmental Affairs.
Several key events highlight the week, including the Campus Swap Meet on Tuesday, April 21, which invites students to exchange and donate items before move-out to help reduce waste. That same day, the Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab & Traditional Ecological Knowledge Institute will screen short films about salmon, acorns, and seaweed, offering an Indigenous and place-based perspective on sustainability.
Film also plays a role in the Climate Control screening at the Library Fishbowl, featuring an award-winning project by Art + Film professor Sarah Lasley and her students. On Wednesday, April 22, Ecotopia fills the University Quad with energy, including a food truck and tables from campus and community groups.
The week wraps up with the Sustainability Mixer on Friday, April 24, at Septentrio Winery. The event brings people together for conversation, connection, and the announcement of this year’s Sustainability Champion awards.
For CJ Pehle, member of the Committee on Environmental Affairs and representing the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT), Earth Week is an exciting time.
"There is a wonderful range of events happening for Earth Week this year, it's super exciting! Many are hands-on, and all are informative, important, and relevant to the campus community and beyond. I am especially looking forward to seeing the turnout and engaging in collective learning,” Pehle says.

Together, they show that sustainability at Humboldt is a shared effort, one that continues every day and welcomes everyone to take part.
