Etching her name further in Cal Poly Humboldt and CCAA history, junior guard Emilia Long was named CCAA Newcomer of the Year and All-CCAA Second Team. Long made history by becoming the first student-athlete to be voted CCAA Newcomer of the Year in two sports.
After capturing the honor in women's soccer this past Fall, Long turned her attention to the court, where she averaged 15.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2.9 steals per game. The Port Angeles, Wash., native ranked second in the conference in assists and 15th nationally in steals. She scored double-figures in 21 of 25 games, including six games with over 20 points.
"This is a tremendous honor for Emilia," stated head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "It is well deserved and we are all very proud of her. There is no question that she stepped into this conference and had an immediate impact on both ends of the floor. Emilia plays with high energy, great intensity, and is a true competitor. To receive such a great honor in two sports and to make history in the CCAA is remarkable. I appreciate and greatly respect what she brings to our team and I look forward to seeing her continued growth as a basketball player."
Long led Cal Poly Humboldt in the following categories: points, points per game, assists, assists per game, steals, and steals per game. She finished second on the team in rebounds and rebounds per game, and third on the team in blocks.
Across CCAA statistical rankings, Long finished Top-10 in multiple categories: first in steals, second in steals per game, second in assists, third in minutes per game, third in rebounding (among guards specifically), ninth in scoring, ninth in field goal percentage, tenth in free throw percentage.
In her first year at Cal Poly Humboldt, Emilia Long has collected two CCAA Newcomer of the Year awards and two All-CCAA Second Team recognitions.
