HSU Art Department: THEN is the second in a three-part series of exhibitions presented by the university that demonstrate the variety and evolution of the visual arts and arts instruction at HSU. The first exhibition of the three, NOW, showcasing the art of current faculty and staff of the Art Department is on exhibit through September 15 at Humboldt State University First Street Gallery in Eureka, California. A third exhibition will follow in November at HSU’s Reese Bullen Gallery and will highlight the art of faculty that began teaching art at HSU in the late 1960s through the early 1990s.
“The work on exhibit provides our students and the community with a glimpse into the past and a look at art by faculty who formed the foundation our current Art Department rests upon,” noted Michele McCall-Wallace, Museum and Gallery Practices Faculty and Reese Bullen Gallery Director. “Students enrolled in the Museum and Gallery Practices Program install the exhibitions and learn about the artists exhibited though their research and studies. This exhibit is no exception. The students have been engaged in gathering information, learning how to handle artworks held in collections and designing the exhibition layout.” Artwork for this exhibition has been gathered from several local and regional collections including the Dolores Vellutini Collection, HSU Library Archives – Humboldt Room, Humboldt Arts Council Permanent Collection, HSU Art Department’s Permanent Collection of Art and the Bullen, Thonson and Berry family collections.
