Cal Poly Humboldt is expanding its support for students and their families with the launch of the Family Ambassador program, an initiative designed to build community, share knowledge, and help families feel connected throughout the college experience.

“Families are such an important part of the student experience, and this program creates a meaningful way for them to stay connected, share their stories, and support one another. When families feel engaged and confident, it strengthens the entire Humboldt community and helps students thrive,” says Danielle Muniz, program coordinator for Forever Humboldt Families.

The program brings together parents, guardians, and family supporters of current and former students to serve as trusted, relatable resources for others navigating college life, including prospective students, and other parents and family. Family Ambassadors volunteer in their local communities and online, offering firsthand insight, answering questions, and helping new families feel at home with Humboldt.

Through training and ongoing support, ambassadors are equipped with up-to-date information about academic programs, campus life, and student resources. They also participate in events like Student Send-Off picnics, Move-in Day, and Lumberjack Weekend, where they can connect directly with families and share their experiences.

The goal is to create a network of families supporting families.

Kevin Dell, a parent from Southern California, joined the program after seeing firsthand the impact Humboldt has had on his daughter, Nicole, an Environmental Science & Management major.

“I’ve been to Cal Poly Humboldt on numerous occasions. I love the area, the architecture, and the people,” Dell says. “I’ve met teachers and students, and I’m totally impressed with the educational process.”

For Dell, the experience goes beyond academics. He credits the University community with supporting his daughter, and says becoming a Family Ambassador felt like a natural way to give back.

“I like volunteering, and I hope to help other families who have questions or want insight into Humboldt,” Dell says. “I want to help make their student’s journey as successful as mine has been.”

Sandra Regan, a San Francisco native and parent of Geology student Angelina, also joined the program to help others navigate transitions, especially families of transfer students.

“As the parent of a transfer student, I understand the stress and uncertainty that can come with switching universities,” Regan says. “It’s a big transition for the whole family.”

Her daughter was drawn to Humboldt’s natural environment and has since found opportunities that exceeded expectations. Now, Angelina is thriving.

“She’s built strong relationships with friends and professors, joined research teams, and even secured an out-of-state internship. We attribute so much of her success to Cal Poly Humboldt.”

Regan hopes to use her experience to guide other families considering or adjusting to Humboldt.

“I want to be a resource and help other families see what’s possible here,” Regan says.

Family Ambassadors play a key role in bridging the gap between the University and families, offering authentic perspectives rooted in lived experience. They are encouraged to share their stories, model empathy and respect, and serve as a welcoming point of contact for those with questions or concerns.

The program reflects Humboldt’s broader commitment to student success, recognizing that when families feel informed and supported, students are more likely to thrive.
