As a senior, Bartholomy assembled HSU’s Campus Committee for Sustainability. In keeping with the University’s internationally-emulated Graduation Pledge to a socially and environmentally responsible career, he took up his current full-time position as an Environmental Affairs Analyst for California’s Division of the State Architect in Sacramento. He will keynote the Global Warming Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening, January 31, in the Arcata City Council Chambers.

Bartholomy, who majored in interdisciplinary studies and restoration development, is liaison for sustainability practices to schools, architects, contractors and the general public. He also trains State Architect staff and external stakeholders on how to plan, design, build and operate sustainable structures, like HSU’s new Behavioral & Social Sciences Building.

Humboldt State will be among 1,450 institutions and communities linked in the national climate forum, offering a full day of campus-wide discussions on Wednesday, January 30. More than 25 panels and interactive workshops will take place concurrently in the Kate Buchanan Room at University Center, Goodwin Forum in Nelson Hall, the Green & Gold Room in Founders Hall and the refurbished Campus Center for Appropriate Technology, situated just below the Behavioral & Social Sciences Building.

Scheduled panels include “Designing Neighborhoods to Burn Fat, not Carbon,” “Climate Change and Indigenous Perspectives” and “Helping the Triple Bottom Line with Green Building.” Interactive workshops include sessions on safe and easy biking and home energy use.

“The 2% Solution,” a teleconference featuring activists and experts from around the world, will enable participants to vote for solutions to climate change. Humboldt State is one of the uplink sites for a nationwide Webcast on Wednesday evening. It will be shown in the Kate Buchanan Room at 5:00 p.m.

Free shuttles will operate all day long January 30, departing every half hour from the Arcata Community Center and HSU Library Circle, starting at 8:30 a.m., with a stop at the Arcata Transit Center.

The full agenda and meeting times are detailed the HSU Focus the Nation homepage.

Thursday’s Town Hall Meeting will be available via Humboldt Access Channel 12. Local tribal and political leaders, including Congressman Mike Thompson (via video conference) and Third District Supervisor John Woolley, one of Humboldt State’s 2004 Distinguished Alumni, will take part.

“We will join with thousands across the country to educate ourselves and demand from our leaders aggressive action to protect our climate, our planet and the most vulnerable among us,” said Jennifer Berman, Coordinator of the Redwood Alliance’s Climate Action Project. Participants will include HSU’s Focus the Nation Club and Natural History Museum, Humboldt State Associated Students and the Sierra Club Redwood Chapter North Group, as well as Berman’s organization.
“The HSU Focus the Nation Teach-In is an entirely free event and the whole community is encouraged to attend,” Berman said.

Kristin Gierman, HSU Focus the Nation Club President, said, “It is up to the citizens of the United States to take charge of the nation’s future. Focus the Nation seeks to reach out to all people who want to understand more about what can be done in the face of dramatic climate change”.
