Led by students from the School of Business, this clinic is part of the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA helps low- to moderate-income individuals, persons with disabilities, seniors, and those with limited English proficiency file their taxes accurately and on time. All student volunteers are IRS-certified, having passed a series of tests to earn their credentials.
"Participating in VITA gives students hands-on experience applying classroom knowledge. They build confidence and practical skills while providing a meaningful service to the community,” says Josh Zender, professor in the School of Business at Cal Poly Humboldt.
The clinic operates by appointment only in Siemens Hall through April 15, 2026. Individuals can select their preferred language or request accommodations when booking their appointment online.
VITA services are suitable for straightforward tax returns but do not cover filings involving significant passive income, such as investments, cryptocurrency, or pass-through business tax returns like those of partnerships and corporations.
Using the clinic can potentially save filers hundreds of dollars. On average, individuals pay around $320 for professional basic income tax preparation services, according to the National Society of Accountants.
The VITA clinic not only provides a vital service to under-resourced community members but also gives Business students invaluable real-world experience in tax preparation and client service.
VITA programs have been available nationwide for over 50 years and have been a staple at Cal Poly Humboldt for more than two decades. An additional free VITA clinic is offered at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center in Eureka.
