Housing Fair Offers Tips on Finding a Place Off-Campus

Looking to take some of the confusion out of moving off campus? Humboldt State University’s Housing & Residence Life Office hosts an off-campus housing fair with local property management companies on Monday, April 25 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Great Hall above College Creek Marketplace. All HSU students are invited to attend this free informational meeting.

Several local property management companies will be available to answer questions, hand out rental agreements, and discuss housing opportunities with students.

Housing & Residence Life will also hold Off-Campus Housing Presentations on April 27 and May 3 from 5pm to 6pm in the Klamath River Room, 2nd floor JGC. “We walk through how to complete rental applications, how to evaluate potential rentals, discuss how living here on campus gives students valuable rental history, set Landlord expectations such as co-signers, income verification and how to fill out rental applications. Landlords and property managers will likely look at your credit, and many freshmen have never gone online to pull their credit reports, so we help them with that, too,” says Elizabeth Tellez, Housing staff member. “The fair is a great way to get the ball rolling.”

HSU has resources online for students making the move off campus. The website includes information on local rentals and a bulletin board to help find a roommate.

Students who want more assistance can always drop by the Housing & Residence Life office, located in the Jolly Giant Commons. The office is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and staff is available to answer any questions about moving off campus and provide residents with a Rental Release of Information.

One thing Tellez wants students to be aware of is that May is the best time to start looking for housing for fall and secure a location by July. Many upperclassmen are moving out and there are spaces available. But be prepared to pay a security deposit and rent to cover the summer months. “The rule of thumb is that you pay when you sign the lease.”
