HSU Captures the Spirit of the Holidays

The holiday spirit of giving is alive and well at HSU! Here’s a roundup of efforts by students and employees to help local and campus communities.

Spreading Cheer to Local Children
For the last 20 years, a former HSU employee has led an effort that made the holiday season brighter for underprivileged Humboldt County children. Now, with his help, Forever Humboldt and the Forever Humboldt Students Club are re-launching the effort as Winter Wishes. Under the program, you can be a sponsor by purchasing $50-$100 in gifts for a local child in need.

To learn more about how to become a sponsor, go to alumni.humboldt.edu/winter-wisheshttps://http://alumni.humboldt.edu/winter-wishes, or contact Alumni &Engagement at (707) 826-3132 or alumni@humboldt.edu

Taking on College Hunger
There are college students nationwide struggling to get enough to eat. Here at HSU, we’re tackling the problem through the Food for Thought project. It seeks ways to attack college food insecurity from all angles. That means providing food aid, offering health education and cooking lessons, conducting original research on college hunger, and seeking ways to change state and national policies that make it difficult for students to access help.

Food for People Fundraiser
The Social Work Student Association is hosting a fundraiser for Food for People. The SWSA is accepting financial contributions through the holidays. If you’re interesting in supporting the fundraiser, drop by Gist Hall, room 122, and leave your contribution in the donation box.

For details about the fundraiser, contact Tyree Love at SL96@humboldt.edu or SW-14-15@humboldt.edu.

Donations Make Good Neighbors
Taking a different approach to food drives, student interns from the Center for Service Learning & Academic Internships reached out to local residents in the Center’s 17th annual Neighborhood Food Drive for Food for People.

Last month, students fanned out along California Avenue and Diamond Drive, dropping off empty bags that included a note asking for food donations. Students returned a week later and collected bags that were, as they had hoped, full of food items.

The Center helps students gain practical experience through community service projects, service learning and academic internship courses. For more information about the Center or the Neighborhood Food Drive, please call Stacy Becker at (707) 826-4963.

Other events: The campus recently threw its annual holiday party for employees, who were encouraged to bring food donations for Food for People. And on Saturday, Dec. 6, the Business and Economics club hosted a toy drive for Toys for Tots at the club’s annual Ugly Sweater Contest.
