Humboldt State’s film series will run three consecutive weeks at 3 p.m. in Siemens Hall, Room 128, beginning Oct. 13 with Nourish: Food + Community, followed with a discussion led by HSU Health Educator Mira Friedman. The film documents the worldwide effects of individuals’ and society’s diets and how wholesome choices can improve community and environmental health.

Plenty authors Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon will join a panel discussion with farmers and local food advocates at CR’s 24th annual Science Night on Fri., Oct. 22, at CR’s Eureka campus, 5-9 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

The book’s title stems from the writers’ joint experiment: relying on food produced within 100 miles of their Vancouver apartment for an entire year. The Seattle Times acclaimed the work one of the top 10 books of 2007.

In their chronicle, the two independent journalists scrutinize the ecological footprint of food, farmers’ and community markets, the science of paleoecology, and the ins and outs of canning and corn storage.

Plenty is the fifth annual selection of the HSU/CR common book partnership, which provides a forum to promote literacy and the free exchange of ideas among students, staff and community members. The latest book highlights campus and community interest in sustainability and local food production. It is also an accessible reading choice for high school students.

Both HSU and CR are offering one-unit classes about the book this semester. Faculty at both schools are incorporating the book in their classes.
