HSU Education Faculty Member Named Outstanding Teacher

Shannon Morago, an instructor in Humboldt State University’s School of Education, is one of five teachers chosen to receive an Outstanding Teacher of America award from the Carlston Family Foundation. Recipients are selected based on nominations the foundation receives from former students. Morago’s nominator was a former chemistry and biology student Morago taught Six Rivers Charter High School in Arcata, Calif.

“I am deeply honored to be selected by the Carlston Family Foundation, especially so because the award is student driven,” Morago said. “I have had the good fortune in my career to interact with some truly incredible kids who have had to overcome many struggles to accomplish their goals. Engaging with these students about science and life has been my pleasure.”

According to the foundation’s website, the ninth annual Outstanding Teacher of America Award is one of five given this year by the Carlston Family Foundation to teachers in California “who by their own example, demonstrate the value of knowledge through their commitment to their students' academic successes, and to encourage other educators to simulate these successful teaching patterns.”

The award also includes a $15,000 cash prize and a $5,000 prize to be awarded to the teacher’s school, in this case Six Rivers Charter High School. In addition, award winners become members of an Advisory Board dedicated to improving instruction in California classrooms. To date, the Foundation has honored 41 exceptional California secondary teachers.

Morago will be presented with the award at a ceremony in Mill Valley, Calif., in October.
